Career After LLM in India: Salary, Job Roles & Opportunities

An LLM (Master of Laws) degree is very common among law graduates who wish to specialise in law and enhance their career prospects. The Criminal Law Master’s Degree can prepare a student for exciting career prospects in India and globally, with specialisations in arbitration, corporate law, constitutional law, and other areas of the law.

Advantages of opting for Higher Studies after LLB?

After completing LLB, many law graduates choose to pursue higher studies in Law to gain advanced knowledge of the law and boost their careers. Students gain research skills, analytical thinking and subject-specific expertise from taking an LLM. It can also offer increased career progression opportunities over just an LLB qualification.

Typically, LLM courses in India last 1 to 2 years, though some universities offer longer programs.

Recommended specialisations for LLM

There are multiple specialisations the student can select according to their interests and career plans. Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Criminal Law Degree
  • Corporate Law
  • Constitutional Law

  • International Law
  • LLM in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution
  • LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

These specialisations have been created in response to the need for legal experts in new aspects of the law.

Job Roles After LLM in India

Graduates of a Law Postgraduate Course have several career options available. There are several common types of jobs available, such as:

Legal Consultant

Legal consultants provide legal counsel and guidance to businesses, organisations, and individuals regarding legal issues and compliance.

Legal Researcher

There are opportunities in policy organisations, think tanks, universities, and law firms.

Arbitrator and Mediator

Students with a specialisation in LLM (Arbitration and Dispute Resolution) are usually employed in the fields of dispute resolution and commercial arbitration.

Lecturer or Professor

After an LLM, candidates may choose to pursue careers in academia, teaching, and research.

Salary After LLM in India

LLM graduates can earn a variety of salaries depending on their specialisation, experience and the company they work for. Freshers earn an annual income in the range of ₹ lakh to ₹ lakh. Lawyers employed by corporate law firms, multinationals, or niche practice areas could earn much more than others.

As commercial dispute settlement mechanisms in India gain momentum, experts in LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Arbitration are seeing a surge in demand.

Additional Opportunities

Students interested in dispute settlement may also consider an LLM or a Diploma in Arbitration to gain hands-on experience and industry-specific expertise. These qualifications may help to improve employability skills and offer specific skills in legal dispute management.

To sum up, a Master’s Degree in Criminal Law or another speciality course in law can lead to a variety of career paths, such as litigation, corporate law, academia, research, and dispute resolution. Advanced legal education is still a good option for students aiming for higher studies after completing an LLB. Academic programs like DIST College provide educational streams to support the growth of future lawyers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to pursue successful careers in the legal field.
